When I was a little kid, my mom made me set up a lemonade stand in my neighborhood with a couple of other kids.
It was blazing hot, y’all, and our lemonade was ice cold.
We priced each (1) cup at 25¢.
They sold like hot cakes at country fairs.
We could have charged 50¢.
This beverage could have marketed itself as a nourishing elixir then and there in the downright thickness of a sticky, humid heat wave in the heart of Georgia.
Point being, we made good money that day selling what we owned.
Lesson?
When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
Just don’t forget to sell it.

Different ways to sell
There’s no shortage of platforms out there on the Internet on which to sell your belongings.
They’re all foaming or watering or somehow both at the mouth at the mere thought of brokering your sale.
It’s almost needless to say that your enthusiasm won’t and probably shouldn’t match their thirst.
Yet, in the case it does, just keep in mind not everything in your dimly-lit and somehow damp storage unit is fit for sale.
You wouldn’t sell your 98-year-old snoring grandfather’s cobweb-covered revolver on Amazon for example (unless, you have a jail-wish in which case please proceed).
We separated the general and more specialized selling websites in two different categories below.
GENERAL
- Facebook MarketplaceBack in 2016, 450 million people were spending a lot of time in “Groups” on Facebook meant for buying and selling. The social networking giant went ahead and launched a new in-app tab solely for the purpose of P2P (peer-to-peer) shopping in October. This marketplace gives you the power to make money in the same place you once had to tell that one Facebook friend to chill out with the “pokes”.
Scroll and shop a relevancy-sorted catalog of items from people who live nearby, who don’t necessarily have to be your friend on Facebook. Communicate with sellers on Facebook Messenger, and check out their profile to judge if they’re trustworthy.Facebook Marketplace launched in the US, UK, Australia, and New Zealand back on that fateful day in October. No telling just yet how many Halloween-specific items were sold and/or bought that month, but we’re guessing the oddly specific launch date helped poor planners capitalize on the holiday.
- eBayThe classic eBay is perfect for selling electronics and memorabilia. You’ll court multiple buyers, and ultimately decide who makes it out with your once-precious bounty. In essence, the way it works is a seller lists an item, adding photos and a description and choosing a price and shipping options. Buyers then can bid on it or simply “Buy it Now.” When a deal has been made, buyers make payment via any of a number of different payment options, and the seller ships it.The selling fee is higher than Grailed’s, but there is a larger, less educated buyer-pool on eBay.
- NextdoorNextdoor is one of the safest online networks that makes itself available for hosting transactions.Click inside the “Post a message, event, poll, or alert to neighbors” box at the top of your Newsfeed.Select the For Sale and Free category.

Women’s Clothes
- PoshmarkPoshmark is every woman’s go-to for selling clothes that just don’t have a place in their closet anymore.Sellers only need to upload photos of their items from their phone to the app in order to list them for sale. Poshmark takes a $2.95 commission on all sales under $15. It takes a 20% commission on any sales above $15.Suzanne Canon personally pulled in over $1 million in sales since she started selling in 2012. Selling on Poshmark is now her full-time job.
“I don’t understand how it happened. I went on the app to make a little money on extra clothes,” she told Business Insider.
Books
Generally, you’ll want to sell your books on Bookscouter. BookScouter makes this process easy by quickly searching all those sites for you. Our technology submits the ISBN to each of the sites, just as you would.
It then displays the prices from those sites so you can see the range of offers and decide where you want to sell your book.
General selling tips
- Take high-resolution photos – portraits, if possible – of your to-be-sold belongings.
- List as many details about your item as possible.
- Advertise to your social media for positive reviews, especially upon selling. Do so by following up with the buyer via e-mail and letting them know what else you have for sale they or their friends might be interested in.
You may have many reasons to start selling your belongings on these platforms.
You may find your home cluttered.
You may be moving.
You may just need to part with some extra cash to make a dream come true, like my friend who sold his car to pay for a music video to help a client acquire a record deal.
Whatever your reason is, sell wisely, and let us know how your experience was in the comments.
